Sinus infections, and the subsequent headaches, fatigue, cough and congestion that come along with them, are never pleasant. Infections that cause a fever of more than 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit or severe facial swelling or pain need to be treated by a doctor, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). However, people usually heal less-severe infections at home with nasal salines, humidifiers, by drinking lots of fluid, and with certain foods.

Pineapple

Eat pineapples for their bromelain. This enzyme may relieve symptoms of sinusitis, according to the UMMC. Bromelain has anti-inflammatory properties that can aid in reducing inflammation and swelling, reports H.R. Maurer in the 2001 article, "Bromelain: biochemistry, pharmacology and medical use," published in the journal "Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences."

Colorful Fruits and Veggies

Consume lots of other fruits and vegetables, especially those that contain quercetin, the plant pigment that's responsible for the colors found in produce, advises the UMMC. This pigment acts as an antihistamine. Combining the power of pineapple's bromelain with quercetin-containing foods is most effective. Quercetin is found in apples, citrus fruits, apricots, beets, berries, celery, cuciferous vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts, cherries, greens like spinach and kale, onions, peaches, pears, and peppers, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The late Dr. Bernard Jensen recommended combining grapefruit juice and celery juice; apple juice and watercress juice with 1/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar; or coconut milk with carrot juice.

Yogurt

Eat yogurt to gain the probiotic lactobacillus. Probiotics are "friendly" bacteria that can help a person reduce the chance of developing allergies that lead to or aggravate sinusitis, according to the UMMC. These also are helpful if a person must take antibiotics for sinusitis, according to Debra Fulghum Bruce and Murray Grossan's "The Sinus Cure: 7 Simple Steps to Relieve Sinusitis and other Ear, Nose and Throat Conditions."
